Fruit & Nut Tree Guilds at Parkrose Permaculture

Our urban permaculture garden in Portland, Oregon, includes a diverse collection of fruit and nut trees, shrubs, and perennial plants arranged using the principles of permaculture guild design.

A fruit tree guild brings together plants that serve different ecological functions, supporting pollinators, improving soil health, providing habitat, and making productive use of limited growing space.

By incorporating species with different flowering and fruiting periods, we help provide seasonal resources for pollinators while creating a more diverse and resilient food-producing landscape.

Early Bloomers

Our early-season flowering fruit trees and shrubs include:

Early Laxton Plum
Quince
Romeo and Juliet Bush Cherries
Peaches

Midseason Bloomers

As spring progresses, additional fruit trees and shrubs begin flowering:

Late Plum
Pears
Apples
Medlar
Mulberry
Elderberry

These plants are part of our ongoing approach to urban food forest gardening, where biodiversity, ecological relationships, and practical food production guide how we design and maintain our growing spaces.

The garden continues to evolve as we observe how different plants interact, respond to seasonal conditions, and contribute to the larger ecosystem.
